Outside DECC entrance from the late 80sFounded in the basement of a small bicycle repair shop, DECC began with a simple challenge and an innovative solution. Evert Mellema was asked to solve a recurring problem with jukebox sector pins sticking because the traditional oil lubricant attracted dust and debris. Looking for a better approach, Evert and his brother Don experimented with a dry film lubricant known as PTFE, successfully creating a cleaner and more reliable solution. As word spread about their work, customer demand quickly grew through word of mouth alone. Encouraged by this success, Don and Evert purchased a building on Wallen Avenue, and the history of The DECC Company began. The company’s name was created from the initials of Don, Evert, their brother Chet, and their father, also named Chet. From 1964 to 1974, Don and Evert Mellema led the company, laying the foundation for what would become a respected name in functional coating applications.

Over the years, DECC acquired neighboring buildings, expanding to a 100,000 square foot facility. In 1994, the leadership of DECC transitioned to the next generation when Randy, Fred, and Doug Mellema took over ownership of the company. Under their leadership, DECC continued to grow its capabilities and reputation within the coating industry.

A major turning point came in 2005 when current CEO Fred Mellema became the sole owner. During this time, Fred focused heavily on strengthening DECC’s community and company culture. He introduced the company’s Profit Sharing program and established the C.O.R.E. Values, which continue to serve as the cultural foundation of the company today.

As DECC continued to evolve, the company made significant investments in technology and operations. In 2009, DECC implemented the Plex Management System, an ERP software that provides complete traceability throughout every step of the coating application process. In 2012, the company advanced its production capabilities by transitioning from hand spraying to a fully automated electrostatic spray line, increasing efficiency and consistency.

The DECC Co. Est. in 1964DECC’s growth also extended beyond manufacturing. In 2014, the company began its partnership with Habitat for Humanity, reflecting its commitment to supporting the local community. In 2016, DECC implemented the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS), helping streamline business planning, communication, and strategic execution across the company. Continuing its focus on operational improvement, DECC installed belt wash equipment in 2019 to further enhance production processes and quality standards.

Today, the DECC Company has become a sought-after coating application company throughout North America and continues to grow and expand. Looking ahead, DECC has introduced a new Flatline Spray coating machine specifically designed for dielectric coatings that help protect against electrical currents. Guided by our core values and commitment to quality, DECC’s continued growth is driven by the dedication and hard work of the people who uphold those standards every day.
